Local Elementary schools in Arezzo
Ciao!
In my journey to learning how to be the best teacher I can be, I decided to learn in Italy. I was allowed to observe a school classroom, here, in Arezzo, Italy! I was so excited I had to share my experience.
The earlier school grades are grade one through grade five. Instead, of being called elementary schools they are translated to mean primary grades. The students begin school around 8am and are finished by 1pm, except on Wednesday. Wednesdays are their long days and they stay during the afternoon. They have one teacher they stay with throughout the day. The students start with a teacher in grade 1 and stay with them until grade 5. We have many similarities and differences with these local schools.
In Arezzo, Italy the children do not have text books, or work sheets. Their teachers create the curriculum. The children keep most of their work in an interactive notebook the teachers, or the students created. Since, the teachers create the curriculum they follow a project approach theory. Project Approach focuses on the process of creating a project. This is also, a form of integrated curriculum which, means the project involves more than one subject. They can focus on math, reading, and science all in one activity.
Of course, the students are mainly taught in Italian. Just like many children in the United States are taught the basics of French, and Spanish, these students are taught English. The third grade class I visited had one hour of English, twice a week. They were in an emergent class, which means the whole hour class was taught in English.
Great question. The student do not have served meals at school. They are recommended to eat before school, and eat lunch after school. They are allowed to eat snacks around 10am. I must run now I have more learning and exploring to do!
Arrivederci
